Bioflocculation of Euglena gracilis via direct application of fungal filaments: a rapid harvesting method

چکیده

Abstract The high cost and environmental impact of traditional microalgal harvesting methods limit commercialization biomass. Fungal bioflocculation microalgae is a promising low-cost, eco-friendly method but the range fungal species tested to date narrow. Here, eight non-pathogenic, filamentous fungi were screened for their ability self-pelletize flocculate Euglena gracilis (ca.50 µm motile microalga) in suspension. Self-pelletization was under various rotational speeds, which formed pellets ( Ø > 0.5 cm) selected tests. Filaments each combined with E. at ratios based on dry weight. Harvesting efficiency determined by measuring change cell counts over time, settling flocs evaluated batch Three species, Ganoderma lucidum , Pleurotus ostreatus Penicillium restrictum able reliably harvest 62–75% while leaving it unharmed. results demonstrated that self-pelletization, harvesting, dependent species. algae ratio also had significant contrasting effects settling. In balancing needs both settle biomass, optimal 1:2. application filaments suspension produced readily less time-consuming than other commonly used methods. This especially attractive biomass low-value products where speed, low cost, integrity vital.

Studies with a more rapid method of vitamin B12 assay utilizing Euglena gracilis.

The use of microbiological assay techniques for the determination of vitamin B12 concentrations in serum is well established. Various microorganisms have been used for this purpose, each with specific advantages. The use of Euglena gracilis has become widespread since it was first introduced by Hutner, Provasoli, Stokstad, Hoffmann, Belt, Franklin, and Jukes (1949). The reports of Mollin and Ro...

A rapid and efficient method for isolation of total RNA from Euglena gracilis (Euglenoidea).

RNA isolation is essential to the study of gene expression at the molecular level. However, it is difficult to isolate RNA from organisms that contain large amounts of polysaccharides or other compounds that bind or coprecipitate with RNA, such as the unicellular protist Euglena gracilis. Currently, there is no commercial kit available that is specific for the isolation of high-quality RNA from...

The Mitochondrion of Euglena gracilis.

In the presence of oxygen, Euglena gracilis mitochondria function much like mammalian mitochondria. Under anaerobiosis, E. gracilis mitochondria perform a malonyl-CoA independent synthesis of fatty acids leading to accumulation of wax esters, which serve as the sink for electrons stemming from glycolytic ATP synthesis and pyruvate oxidation. Some components (enzymes and cofactors) of Euglena's ...

Lipid Metabolism of Euglena Gracilis.

In both plants and animals pathways exist for the conversion of oleic acid to polyenoic acids (1, 2), but these pathways lead to different end products in the two kingdoms. In green plants the double bond system is extended toward the methyl end of the molecule to form linoleic and linolenic acids (9,12, lBoctadecatrienoic acid) (1,3,4). The ciliated protozoa, the amoebae, and some other animal...

Chloroplast.Free Preparation from Euglena gracilis'

A bstract. A supernatant fraction, free of plstids, was prepared by centrifugation from Euglena gracilis and used to ascertain whether or not the inhibition of carbon dioxide fixation by oxygen, known as the Warburg effect, is entirely independent of the light-driven phase of photosyn-thesis. This fraction exhibited in the dark the main features of the Werburg effect; namely, an inverse relatio...
